In the 1950s, the United States was at the height of nuclear testing. With all these tests came plenty of information except for one thing… the effect of the bomb on human remains. This is where project sunshine comes in. Dr. Libby was a big supporter of this project. He felt it was of prime importance to gather more data on the effects of radiation on human bodies. So, he let it be known even if in secret that anyone good at body-snatching would be doing their country an excellent service.

There were over 1500 human remains taken in secret, and many of them were babies. Many of these remains were taken from all over Europe and Australia. One such person this affected was Jeane Prichard. The doctors had taken the legs of her still-born baby; when Jeane asked to put a christening robe on her, they refused to hide what they had done. Another family found out that their grandmother was used at a nuclear testing ground. She did donate her body to science, but that is not what they had in mind.

All this testing was done to find out about Strontium-90 and how it absorbed into plants/animals and then passed to humans. While it is customary to use human samples in testing, this was all done without consent or even knowledge of families. All of this information started to come to light in the early ’90s, and because there was so much information, many countries are still investigating to this day. However, people like Dr. Libby, who even won a noble prize for his work, will never get their judgment because they have passed from this world.
