In 1996, on a crisp fall night in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, two gravediggers were going about their business. When they caught a black figure flying over their heads, it is believed that this was the first-ever sighting of Mothman. Not long after this sighting, two couples were out on a drive. Roger, Linda Scarberry, Steve, and Marry Mallette were having a lovely evening. Out of the corner of their eyes, they saw glowing red eyes looking at them from the forest. Curious, they pulled over to get a closer look.
Mothman came swooping down from the trees, and the terrified couples took off. Mothman chased their car down the winding road as they tried to gain speed. When they got closer to town, they lost sight of Mothman and headed to the police station. They told the officer that a large gray creature with glowing red eyes and looked like a flying man had just chased them in the TNT area. Of course, the police thought it was a joke as the reports had not ramped up yet.

Within a few weeks of the first sighting, reports started to pour in. Many of the descriptions talk about a creature around 10ft tall and has a wingspan around the same. It is said to be man/bird/moth-like, as well as having its famous glowing red eyes. The creature was also often seen in the TNT area of town. Some think it had set up its home in the old chemical munitions site in the area. They also believe that these chemicals caused mutations in some animals to create Mothman. At the same time, the police of the town thought that it was just a colossal heron flying around.
It wasn’t long after the first sighting that mysterious men in black showed up in the town. They would often visit those who had come forward with a report. Some individuals even say these men threatened them to keep quiet about what they saw. There are about 100 reported sightings, but many believe that there are many more. However, they were too scared to come forward.

On December 15th, 1967, a tragedy was about to occur. On that day, the silver bridge collapsed, killing 46 people. Many people came forward saying they saw Mothman near or on the bridge early that morning. This led people to believe that Mothman is evil, while others think it is trying to warn us of impending doom.
After this awful tragedy, the sightings of Mothman stopped overnight. No one knows for sure what happened to Mothman. To this day, Mothman is talked about and found in movies, tv shows, and even festivals.
