I grew up in a small town in Maine. Without close inspection, it seemed like any other town. However, the town is far from ordinary. It is filled with unexplained phenomena and has the slightest feel of something sinister. I had many encounters with the unexplained during my time there. One encounter that has always stuck out to me is the disembodied sound. The first time I ever heard it was over the phone while I was talking to someone. They had said they heard music coming from the bog just past the woods near their home. They put the phone on speaker, and I was unable to really tell what it sounded like but there was something off-putting about it. The person I was talking on the phone with wanted to go find the sound. However, I insisted that it was best to leave it be.

The first time I heard the sound for myself was maybe a year or so later. It was a cool and rather foggy summer night. I was driving by bog with my windows down and enjoying the freedom of a high schooler with a car. The sound seemed to come out of nowhere. At first, I thought it was someone playing music, so I slowed down in front of a grassy field where I knew thick woods would lay between me and the bog beyond them. As I stopped to listen a deep primal fear began to rise. I knew something was out of place. The sound of old circus music crept toward me, enticing me to come to find it. My fear grew and the urge to not end up like a character in a horror movie took over and prompted me to drive away. The sound followed me for at least a half-mile. The whole time the music sounded as if it was the same distance from me until it just disappeared completely. From then on, my friends and I would hear the sound from time to time and discuss the possibilities of what it might be.

Some time passed and at this point, I had graduated from high school and was taking a few years off before college. Two of my friends, my little brother, and I were all hanging out one night. It was getting late and we were getting bored so we decided to walk around the woods. Hearing the sound became a normal occurrence for us so hearing it that night wasn’t a shock even though never lost its unsettling feel. We drove up to the trail we wanted to explore. We all noted how the music seemed like it was following us. Understandably we were on edge but started on the hike. The creepy old circus music kept after us but at that point hadn’t made any progress toward catching up with us. We did our best to ignore it and looked around some eerie abandoned shacks. As my friend and I were staring at a snake we had found in the walls of a shack the music made a noticeable increase in volume. This made us jump a bit and get a bit scared to make matters worse it sounded as if the music was coming from where we had parked. Trying not to freak out we all grabbed some sticks and started to head back. The music, however, went back to keeping its distance the closer we got. Relieved that we got to the car and there was no twisted circus waiting for us, we hopped in and made our way home.

After that night our curiosity peaked, and we wanted to go find the source of the music. One of my friends who was very into spirituality decided to use a spirit board to ask about the music. She was told under no circumstance that she should ever try and seek out this music. After hearing this we all agreed it would be best to leave it be. To this day if you are lucky and driving down the same road near this bog you can hear the faint music beckoning you to try and find it.

Also, if you have any ideas on what this music might be let us know!

That is incredibly spooky. I never would have gone into the woods at night. The woods oared full of mysteries! Enjoyed reading of this phenomenon, so interesting.
